About the Book:

The present book is the outcome of three National Seminars on the topic - `People`s Role in 1857 Uprising-Delhi and Neighbouring Region`, organised by the Centre for Research and Publication of Surajmal Memorial Education Society, New Delhi. This volume includes forty-four research papers presented in these national seminars. These papers cover a very big geographical and cultural trail of Delhi, U.P., Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and upto Bihar with inputs from literature, folklore, archaelogical records, local narratives and even scientific themes and perspectives.<-p>

`People`s Role in 1857 Uprising-Delhi and Neighbouring Region` edited by Dr Vir Singh explores the recent thinking about the role of common people specialy the peasants and kamgars<-i> of the villages in the 1857 uprising.<-p>

The objective of this volume converges on one central theme: gaining new insights into the events and the people that made 1857.<-p>

This volume is a step forward towards the direction of more illumination of various facets of the role and contribution of the common people in 1857 uprising to mark the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of this first war of independence.<-p>


About the Author:

Dr. Vir Singh is an Honorary Director of Maharaja Surajmal Centre for Research and Publication, run by Surajmal Memorial Education Society, New Delhi.<-p>

His research work `Kamayani Ki Katha: Gaveshnatmak Anusheelan`<-i> was published in 1976. While explaining different aspects of ancient legend in world literature of deluge and development of mankind thereafter, he learnt interdisciplinary approach which he utilised while establishing the aforesaid research centre.<-p>

Dr. Vir Singh used his intensive study of the primary sources on the Jats to update three prominent works on the Jat History-
