About the Book:

The Tarikh-i-Firoz Shahi does not only narrate history but is a part of history itself. The content of this book was written in the period of Delhi Sultanate, originally in Persian by Zia-ud-din-Barni, from the period of Ghiyas-ud-din Balban to Firoz Shah Tughlaq. It was later translated into English by Sir H.M. Elliot. The author of the first part of this book ``Barni`` was one of the companions of Sultan Mohammed-Bin-Tughlaq and hence, the author describes the incidents in detail, both from lived memory and the tales passed down from ancestors.

The second part of this book, written by Shams-i-Siraj Afif during the regime of Firoz-Shah-Tughlaq in Persian, describes the details about the culture, administration, architecture and social life of the people of Firoz-Shah-Tughlaq`s regime. This was also translated into English.

The ancestors of both authors occupied high posts in the court of Sultans of Delhi. Therefore, this book contains exhaustive information about conspiracies, legal matters, court proceedings, travel, festivals, customs, culture, public life etc. of the Delhi Sultanate. The book is an indispensable aid in the study of the multifaceted history of Delhi.

Tarikh-i Firoz Shahi of Ziau-d din Barni, Shams-i-Siraj `Afif, by Henry M. Elliot (trans.)
